Wednesday 30th July
Following a tip off from Jerry Warne I located and photographed Broad-leaved Helleborine on the Motorway Lake at New Hythe this afternoon. There were around half a dozen spikes of this really attractive Orchid - a New Hythe first for me. Also 6 Speckled Wood, 2 Large White and several Gatekeeper around this pit which is accessed off of Lunsford Lane.
Afterwards i had a very quick check of the round pond for Small Red-Eyed Damselfly - no sign here yet but a few Red-Eyed Damsels, Emperor, Black-tailed Skimmer and Azure/Common-blue Damselflies. 20+ Gatekeeper, 10+ Meadow Brown, 1 Comma and 2 Large White were also seen in my brief visit.

Really crisp shots of the Broad-leaved Helleborine , beautiful flower .
The male Black Tailed Skimmer has obviously done his duty , shown by the two places where the female has held on during mating , and the blue has rubbed off , just above the black end of his abdomen
I don't think the Violet Helleborine will flower this year at High Elms , perhaps next .

The skimmer is so pretty....Lovely photographs....
Love the shot of the helleborine. They are quite common in the woods around here but I find them difficult to photograph sharply as they usually grow in deep shade and the flash doesn't do them justice.
