Thursday January 1st
Frustratingly I couldn't get out until about 2pm today so had a couple of hours or so to kick off my year list at New Hythe. I did manage to see 47 species and hear 2 more - so that's not bad. Last year i spent all day there on January 1st and managed 60 species.
Best species were a redhead Goosander on Alders Pit (off Lunsford Lane) and a drake and 2 duck Red Crested Pochard on Tesco Lake. The first I have seen here for a number of years. I also saw a Stonechat. I missed plenty of common species so plenty to add on my next visits.
List was:
Blackbird, Blue Tit, Magpie, Black Headed Gull, Coot, Long Tailed Tit, Robin, Cormorant, Red Crested Pochard (3), Greylag Goose, Mute Swan, Mallard, Gadwall, Tufted Duck, Woodpigeon, Common Gull, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Moorhen, Sparrowhawk (2), Robin, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Dunnock, Chiffchaff (2), Pochard, Starling, Lesser Black backed Gull, Pigeon, shoveler, Carrion Crow, Collared Dove, Mistle Thrush, Great Tit, Goldfinch, House Sparow, Herring Gull, Goosander, Bullfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, song Thrush, Stonechat, Pied Wagtail, Fieldfare. Heard only - Cettis Warbler and Water Rail.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Nice start to the year Steve, there's 18 species on that list I didn't record today!
Hi Steve
Nice to have R/C/pochards there. I've never seen them there. Goosander too, not bad. good find mate.
Steve ,
For a short visit , that's a great start to the year .
Could be another visit in the next cold snap .
Went through on the way to visit at Cliffe Woods , but no one on bridges = no Waxwings .
Good list Steve......birds are plentiful here....the cold weather has brought them in to the feeders.....a family of pied wagtails have joined us which is nice.....
Hope you and your little family have a healthy and happy New Year.......
