Thursday 31st May

My annual visit to Mereworth Woods a few miles down the road last night for Nightjar. It was a lovely still and bright evening. The first of c5 roding Woodcock appeared around 8.45pm but we had to wait until around 9.45 for the first churring Nightjar, shortly after one wheeled in front of us and disappered over our heads. We have watched and listened to Nightjar here for a number of years now and the young conifer plantations are now small woods - it does make you wonder who long the Nightjar are going to hang on. A Tawny Owl 'keewicked' as we left about 10.15.
