I have set up this blog to record my bird and general wildlife sightings in the 5 mile radius of my home. This includes my local patch - New Hythe/Leybourne Lakes. This is an inland area of West Kent, a few miles from Maidstone. I rarely stray more than a few miles from this area these days. I live in a village called Birling which is at the foot of the North Downs and about 1.5 miles from New Hythe.

Friday 21st November
A Firecrest was reported along Lunsford Lane near Alders Lake so I took a detour on my way somewhere else on the off chance that I might hear it calling. I didn't in a brief search but did see a female Goldeneye on the small fishing lake adjacent to Alders. Also a few chirpy House Sparrows along here and a small flock of Siskin over.
Steve ,
ReplyDeleteHard luck with the Firecrest , I would like one myself .
Looks like I'll be making a 'winter duck' visit , with permission , soon .
Good luck with the Long Eared Owl in the churchyard .
Do you remember them on the Sunken Marsh behind Brooklands ?
Well done with the Goldeneye Steve, and bad luck with the Firecrest - I'd love to find 1 in Mote Park!!
ReplyDeleteI remember the Long eared owls in the sunken marsh area very well. I had 8 in one bush once! I haven't seen a LEO there for about three years....and that was just a single..
ReplyDeleteI remember the LEOs too. saw a pair in the sunken marsh 10 years ago!!
ReplyDeleteFirecrests are hard to find steve, only had two rcords on my patch, but one of those was in the garden. Keep looking!
I have had 5 Firecrest on my patch over the years. They are recorded here pretty much annually - just luck I guess if you catch up with them - one of my favourite birds
ReplyDeleteHope you manage to see the firecrest next time Steve......
ReplyDeleteI hear that the Firecrest was on my feeders and I didn't see it! We had one nesting in our garden in 1991 but it did not raise a brood.
ReplyDeleteI too heard about the Firecrest, that was one of the reasons I wanted to go to the lakes, but I didn't know which part of Lunsford Lane it had been seen in.If you get any more details can you let me know.Cheers
